In its way, this is the most important election story: All of the election-denying secretaries of state in swing states lost. That means an attempt to repeat Jan 6 and steal the 2024 election will be a lot more difficult https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/12/us/politics/jim-marchant-nevada.html
Voters Reject Election Deniers Running to Take Over Elections

With Jim Marchant’s defeat by Cisco Aguilar in Nevada’s secretary of state race, all but one of the “America First” slate of candidates who espoused conspiracy theories about the 2020 election were defeated.

@anneapplebaum Good piece. I'm hoping the desire for a return to normal, sane politics continues and grows. The chaos of recent years has been tedious, and against most people's interests.

@anneapplebaum I'm so glad about this, it was a nightmare scenario.

I wish a bit more ink had been spilled on the explicit QAnon connection, how these SoS candidates were publicly part of a 'coalition' put together by QAnon promoter Juan O'Savin.

How QAnon Influencer Juan O. Savin Became This Midterm’s Most Worrying Figure

It’s highly likely that candidates who are part of a coalition put together by Juan O. Savin will win their races, according to Fever Dreams’ Will Sommer and Kelly Weill.

@anneapplebaum At least there's still hope for the democracies. That's really good to know, because in Estonia our local trumpist also have very high poll numbers a few months before the elections :(
@diana @anneapplebaum Organizing is key. A lot of food workers unions really pulled their weight, in several of these races here.

@anneapplebaum

This is the news I was most anxious to hear. Huge sigh of relief 😮‍💨

@anneapplebaum
Another important part is that it was the kids that came out and saved us. Statistically, that means their generation will vote in higher numbers, and in the same way, for the rest of their lives.
This election was about generation change-from the boomers to Gen Z,, and with it, the future lookers brighter than it has in years.

@Katrags @anneapplebaum I think the younger generation may have exceeded what pollsters had in their likely voter models, but not sure they turned out as much as you're indicating.

Check out this interview with David Shor, specifically the question about youth turnout.

@alexrosen
They turned out at the highest rates since 1968.
and for the record, anyone that knows anything about stats thinks Shor is a HACK.
@Katrags Do you mind sharing a source for your turnout statement? Maybe you have something from the people you're in touch with who "know anything about stats."

@alexrosen

2018 was the same age group.

Again, i suggest you do not follow a guy that has been has been so constantly criticized my better, more established statisticians its starting to show up on his wiki page.

@Katrags That link didn't work but I found the story on NPR. It backs up what Shor said.

"So far, the highest turnout during a midterm for this voting bloc is 2018 when about 31% of young people who are eligible to vote cast a ballot."

That's not "highest rates since 1968" it's lower than the last miderm.

I wish you were right, but the data isn't there.

Here's the link: https://www.npr.org/2022/11/10/1135810302/turnout-among-young-voters-was-the-second-highest-for-a-midterm-in-past-30-years

Turnout among young voters was the second highest for a midterm in past 30 years

About 27% of voters between the ages of 18-29 cast a ballot in the midterm election this year, according to an early estimate.

@alexrosen
Thank you for telling me you can't read stats, or the article.

@Katrags Since you've clued me in to my inability to read stats and paragraphs, would you mind quoting the part of the article you shared that supports your claim that "they turned out at the highest rates since 1968"?

Thanks in advance for your help!

@anneapplebaum Not wild about people linking to the #NYT when it has such an aggressive paywall.
