Letters: nuclear power is not the only option

“On a freezing cold, windless, winter’s evening”, #Britain’s grid will indeed need an alternative #power source to #wind or #solar, but why is it assumed that only #nuclear can provide an alternative base load? And at the cost of how many billions? And how many decades of lead time?
#Geothermal could do the job faster, more safely and cheaply – for about a quarter of the cost.

Letters: nuclear power is not the only option

Why is the government fixated on Sizewell C when geothermal and tidal energy are safe, simple and cost-effective?

@tuxom Isn't the UK nuclear generation still dependent on CO2, too? I remember during the early phase of the pandemic reading about how the CO2 shortage was mostly getting headlines for making carbonated beverages more expensive, but less well covered was that without CO2 the nuclear plants there couldn't function.

@flabberghaster in the UK all except one of the running reactors use carbon dioxide instead of water as a coolant. It usually flows in a closed cycle but I do not know if it sometimes needs to be replaced for example when they do repairs or refuel.
