Casey Newton (tech guy) reports this evening that: “a large number of number of #Twitter contractors were just laid off this afternoon with no notice, both in the US and abroad. Functions affected appear to include content moderation, real estate, and marketing, among others. Contractors aren’t being notified at all, they’re just losing access to Slack and email. Managers figured it out when their workers just disappeared from the system.” Yikes. 😳
@austinkocher Tells you everything you need to know about Elmo and how he rolls.
@austinkocher I don’t understand how he and his sycophants think they’re going to run the place
@austinkocher I'm beginning to wonder whether there's something clinical going on with him. He's doing this knowing the amount of scrutiny he's already under. If he were in his right mind he'd surely realize the damage this will do to motivation and staff retention at his other businesses.
@phrees @austinkocher After all of the things I've been reading, I seriously wonder does he really want to destroy the company? The second question is: Why would he want to do this? I can understand a new owner wanting to restructure a business but my God! It really seems to me that he really wants to drive the whole company out of business.
@douglawlor @austinkocher I think part of it is his obsession with journalism. Remember him floating the idea of a "Pravda" rating system back in 2018. I think that's what he wants to build now, and if he can't build that he'll destroy the connection between sources, journalists and readers instead.
@phrees @austinkocher It is just so strange. There must be some reason why he is doing what he is doing. I just saw something saying if you use 2FA to sign in to your account it has now been shut down. I haven't tested this so don't know for sure.
@douglawlor @austinkocher He is the living embodiment of "move fast and break things." Hopefully that doesn't also apply to his cars.
@phrees @austinkocher I heard of quality control issues with the cars as well. Not sure if they are getting better.

@douglawlor @austinkocher Hearing about that on Harry Shearer's Le Show now. Huge recalls. 04:44 in this episode

@phrees @austinkocher I've had the same thought. Yesterday he posted (not a reply) "I did it for the lulz" with some sort of emoji, then deleted it within an hour. Not an Elon-watcher generally, but he does not seem well.
@phrees @austinkocher Yesterday he seemed to spend time following and tweeting back to threads on crypto. He seems disconnected, but what do I know, I'm not a billionaire. He also seems to have lost Matt Taibbi, who seems to want the speech-free-for-all thing to be more robustly welcoming to lost souls jonesing for the contrarian takes of the Matt Taibbi substack.
@phrees @austinkocher I mean he’s a malignant narcissist, so….

@austinkocher The Washington Post ran an article: Elon Musk just showed us how not to fire people

Elon Musk just showed us how not to fire people

The trifling way the billionaire dismissed Twitter workers was akin to breaking up with someone via text. It was disrespectful and insensitive.

@austinkocher When they’re laying off the CONTRACTORS…. You know shit is goin DOWN.
