You ever just vibing with your playlist, so you keep turning up the volume one click at a time without planning it, until you abruptly hit max wattage, and your eardrums ache, and your head feels compressed, and you never noticed or consciously intended any of it? Just me?

Interesting topic for sure! You're not alone. As a musician who has his own home recording studio and also plays out in various bands in various settings, I've definitely been the victim of loud music. On stage, band volume can be insane. In my studio, I play right into that pesky Fletcher-Munson Curve, cranking my guitar amp or the music from my monitor speakers loud enough so it "comes alive." Ear fatigue is another trap that tricks me into upping the vol.
