hmmm, I think I finally see the mastodon server I want to migrate to, but it's running an older version and the process is a little scary to me at the best of times... should I just go for it?
@SophieH Hey hey, which one? I can take a little look!
@esdin I've already looked, and it seems chill. my main worry is just if the migration process will be okay from the 4rc to 3.5.3
@SophieH It went pretty smoothly for us; zero down time (some minor merges for custom stuff) Is this your own instance or someone else's?
@esdin someone else's

@SophieH Weird that it's still back on 1.4rc though. That's a lot of stepwise updates to do it safely

Going straight from 1.4rc to 3.5.3 or 4.0.0rc3 would be Bad.

@esdin oh it's rc3. I'm just lazy typing sorry.

anyway I think I'll give it a try. What's the worst that can happen? 😅

@SophieH Not much! 4rc3 is pretty stable from what I've heard - we're on 4rc2+Glitch and went v3.5.3 -> v4rc2 -> v4rc2+Glitch with no issues or data loss (other than some battles getting ruby to update properly)
@SophieH Congrats on getting off of .social if you end up full migrating! Always nice to have a cozy community with a good local ^_^
@esdin @SophieH if you want to be on the safe side, you can export your data as a backup, it can be imported if something goes wrong
@SophieH @esdin I have accounts in both versions, the major difference is the following of hashtags.
@mindcraft @SophieH OH. If you mean it's on 3.5.3 the update to v4.0.0rc3 is very smooth. Did you mean the 1.4rc from 2017 or up to latest? (sorry sorry, I'm overthinking now)

@SophieH how old? If it's 3.5.0 or better, I'd say go for it. (It can at least _show_ edits even if it won't let you edit posts)

Even better if it's glitch-soc which enables local posting.
