Tarmo TanilsooI've gradually started to notice a subset of the Fediverse that seems either to pretend that world is a big happy utopic place and therefore shut itself out of the real world, namely the news, and/or wholly hates journalists.
I'm sorry, but ignoring the news won't stop that hurricane hitting you just because you don't want to pay attention. As bad as the real world is, it will eventually catch up with you, even if you try to look away.
I find particularly disturbing the talk demanding the news to be hidden behind content warnings, because people can't stomach the real world. OK, maybe somewhat fair play. Can compromise.
What turns me off however completely is talk of downright blocking instances containing journalists because some can't stomach seeing news on the timeline. One reason I use the birdsite is the journalists there. Deciding that we don't do news here, is a big minus in my eyes.
I get that journalism is not universally beloved profession these days (Thanks, British tabloids, Fox News et al!), but it is still better than getting your information from a local market.
Chris Young@es5nhc Yes, agreed. From what I understood of the blocking discussions, it seemed to relate to bad moderation decisions rather than journalism per se. Having said that, it also looked a lot like they were trying to find a good excuse to block that host.
