M is not a single service but rather a bunch of different organisations using a shared set of rules to speak to each other. So posting on the site home.social can be read and followed from any other mastodon site (like mastodon.social). Email is an example of something federated. You can send and receive emails to your gmail from any other provider because of the shares set of rules.
