the less crowded nature I suspect is a lot of the novelty. It will change if somehow Mastodon reaches the critical mass of Twitter.

Definitely, it will get crowded with likely little people exodus after Twitter takeover by Elon Musk. Let's enjoy the ride till Mastodon is novel.
