I am strongly considering switching to a self-hosted Mastodon instance, but apparently everyone who does gets to play whack-a-mole against an army of disgusting bigots for a while until they end up with a big enough list of defederated servers. Or they copy another server's block list as a starting point. Been seeing a lot of smaller server admins mentioning this.

Still mulling over the implications of being out on my own like that.

@ExpiredPopsicle I was considering this just from a reliability and performance perspective. The influx of users has made a lot of larger instances slow or even go down several times a week.

A big downside would be no local feed and no federated feed unless you get plugged into a relay...

@drikanis Yup! That's a big part of it for me, too.

mastodon.social was unusable for a few days when the huge influx of new users showed up.
