A caterpillar I found in May, A Mottled Umber perhaps.
We have a 22 Acre field of wet grassland that we have been rewilding over the last 25 years and it's slowly becoming a woodland teeming with wildlife.
We very lightly Graze it with a few elderly horses, they do nearly all the work involved with keeping trails open for us to enjoy it.
At 'scale' it looks a bit 'messy' but here you can see the trees self -seeding.
The bramble thickets and gorse act as tree nurseries by keeping predators away from seedlings.
The real beauty is that when left alone, nature will set about occupying every part of the ecosystem.

Throughout the year the fungal systems are very busy transporting and recycling nutrients throughout the soil system.

we only get to see a tiny proportion of the of fungal 'web' as ~95% of the activity is below ground but at this time of year we get to see the fruiting bodies.

here's some very small fungal fruiting bodies
At this time of year the edges of our field flood, during the spring and summer these are very fertile places.

Even on these wet & windy Irish winter days, colours can be found.
