I have been trying in vain to verify my website on my profile. I put the tag as an embedded code at the bottom of my Google sites page, but I do not see the green check mark on here. Any tips? Am I putting the code in the wrong place? #MastodonHelp #MastodonTips #MastodonVerification
@yana Same problem here with a #GoogleSite. Have tried all sorts of permutations on that link and nothing! Following to see what tips you might get.

If either of you (or anyone else) figures it out, can you let me know? Every time I tried to embed code it blew up the formatting, and when I tried it anyways it still didn't work.

@katyaivanova @jonathanhorowi1 on a second thought, maybe this is not possible. I think Google sites does not let users change the <head> section and that’s where the link should be. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@jonathanhorowi1, @katyaivanova, @yana I looked into this. I know you're probably looking for a solution, but as far as I can tell, you currently cannot get Mastodon's site verification to work with Google sites.

Why? The only way I could find to add a link with a `rel="me"` attribute was through the "Embed code" functionality.

This functionality relies on the web site visitor's web browser (by the use of Javascript) to place the code you specified in the correct place.

Mastodon instances do not use a browser to verify links, and cannot execute Javascript. Honesly from my standpoint this is a very weird decision on Google's part rather than a bug in Mastodon.

Anyway, apparently people are requesting alternative methods of site/domain verification. I'll make sure to mention your case there as well: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20030

Thanks you, this explains everything.

@jonathanhorowi1 @petko @yana thank you! This really helps with the frustrated endless copying & pasting of that link at any place I could find.
