Thought exercises for you, the reader. "Wielding" these against others goes against their spirit. None of the items below can substitute for individual judgement or experience.

In no particular order:

1. One person's "balkanization" is another person's "protective cell wall"

2. Communities can't exist without boundaries; otherwise all you have is a crowd where only the loudest get heard

3. Instances are run by people, not algorithms, and virtually always by people who are donating their time, energy, and money to their users. When you interact with another instance, act as though you're interacting with their guests in their living room.

4. One bad actor can ruin an entire space for everyone else and it only takes one bad actor to drive out all of the good actors, especially the quiet ones

4a. If an admin blocks or defederates aggressively, they may be hyper-attuned to early warning signs and dog whistles that you haven't noticed

4b. If it was an obvious tell, it wouldn't be a dog whistle. Trust marginalized voices when they point these out

4c. A bad actor can act nicely to your face while showing a different one to others

5. No one owes you their attention nor are you owed theirs

Stay safe

And of course if federation within the Fediverse could be boiled down to several thought exercises then we wouldn't have to expect yet another debate.

But remember: You are not your instance (even and especially if you administer it) but you are the sum of the people you hang out with the most. People will notice the company you keep even if you don't. Consider that others may have far fewer instance options than you.

To even exist in any large public space, never mind feel comfortable in it, requires some degree of privilege. To move instances at a whim, even more so. Distinguish between comfort zones and safety zones, between safety in numbers and safety in privacy, and mind where all of those do and do not intersect.

And in closing: Have accounts on multiple instances, establish multiple lines of communication with individuals who want them, and respect the choices of those who want to restrict their interactions to specific spaces.

Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy. Instances and whole platforms disappear overnight, sometimes for no more reason than poor backups. Operations is a specialization in tech for a reason and a demanding skill set at that.

Also, pay your instance admins if you can! Not that this obliges them to host you (outside of explicit contractual agreements). They see a lot of shit so that you don't have you.

Good night!

@jaycie I love this thread. Thank u for this. Will keep this in ind 😊

@eeyam Thank you! And thank _you_ so much for your work!

I totally want to talk COVID-19 and tech. My previous project at work was a COVID-19 diagnostic app for hospitals!

@jaycie that kind of tech is very helpful for us! Tho I doubt we were able to use it here, I’m from a 3rd world country we continue to rely on paper-based tools
@eeyam Yeah, sounds like it could have only helped so much. It mostly replicated an existing printable form.
@jaycie But i’m sure it helped those who used it šŸ™‚
