“Trying to talk about Mastodon about the problem of addressing racism on Mastodon is recalling memories of all my terrible experiences with facebook groups, and I think the reason is that people on Mastodon have the confidence of people who are saying stupid stuff in private”

@Chanimal It's strange, because Mastodon gets dubbed as being more "liberal-leaning" in some white circles. To see that your experiences haven't been entirely friendly is disappointing. I think that your thread is a reminder that we could all be a little bit better, and I hope we as a community will be if and when you come back.
@kie I haven't been here long enough to really say, but if the Mastodon people are full of self congratulation about how we are the better platform, I could see how that could turn into smugness and get in the way of coping with racism when it shows up.
@soaproot And as I've seen and heard from a couple of people so far, hate does show up. Thankfully it's usually self-contained in niche servers with other people with horrid beliefs, which admins usually block - but we must always be vigilant.
@kie I'm totally in favor of vigilance against the horrid content. But I do recommend reading that whole twitter thread - it is more about white Mastos who think they are doing the right thing but don't quite see what they are saying or slow down long enough to listen to the people who are on the receiving end of racism. #MastodonSoWhite #racism
