I’ve been reading “The Eye of The World” and I’m nearing the end. And I must say, I remain uncertain about this book.

@mr_watt I read it again recently, after 20-odd years. It's okay for the time - leans rather heavily on Tolkien tropes. #Fantasy has come a long way since. I read the second book as well, but I think I'll leave the series there - not worth the investment.
@wildwoila How has it changed? I’m still pretty new to it. Do you suggest any books?
@mr_watt It's become much more sophisticated and original. The old stuff is mostly Tolkein rehashed, with little nuance of character development. Check out Robin Hobb, NK Jemisin, George RR Martin, Seth Dickinson, Brandon Sanderson, Tamsyn Muir, Ursula Le Guin (Earthsea).
@mr_watt Hmm, that's a big author dump. Happy to be more specific! If I had to name one book, I'd say Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. But I'm sure you could get no end of vigorous recommendations 😆.

@wildwoila I have heard good things about Assassin’s Apprentice. I’ll have to give it look!

I read “Game of Thrones” before “Eye of The World” and enjoyed it much more. The first book of ASOIAF.

I have a book of Clark Ashton Smith stories next.

@mr_watt If you enjoy Assassin's Apprentice, there is not shortage of sequels to look forward to.

Game of Thrones was definitely part of taking fantasy to the next level. Killing off main characters! Not just black or white! 😯 First few books are awesome but the last couple have started to drag. I suspect GRRM will keel over before finishing the series, as did Robert Jordan. Not sure who they could bring on to finish it off - Brandon Sanderson apparently did a good job with #WoT, but don't think he would be the right fit for #GoT - political intrigue isn't his strong point.

I haven't heard of Ashton Smith - will check them out.
