Sustainable xmas gift ideas:

- nothing

Get them nothing! Get in touch now and tell them to get you nothing too! It'll be great!

@Constababble I was just saying the other day, when you get to a certain age you have everything you need – and anything you’re given is therefore a nuisance, that has to be put somewhere. As a gift I’d rather receive booze or chocolates or nothing at all. :)
@timrichards yeah tell em in advance "pls don't buy me anything and if you do this is my fave choc"
@Constababble I like that fallback option.
@Constababble what is the get them nothing equivalent for kids?

@lauragreen get them a bunch of school supplies or other stuff they need because they've grown out of or worn out their stuff but make them maybe fun or their favourite somehow so you are getting them stuff you'd need to anyway like stationery or hat or beach towel. Practical gifts can be fun! But obviously I am thinking of things I loved as a kid so may not apply to others budget or kid preferences. One of my fave xmas gifts as a kid was a brand new school bag full of awesome pencils and markers and pencil case and stuff. I did need it but I didn't think of that as a problem.

Experiences also make great sustainable gifts if you can afford them because money goes to local wages instead of stuff. Eg. Zoo trip, cooking class, laser tag, facial, massage, fun zone, movies, musical tix, pottery class, crafting class, skating, learn to surf, etc.

@lauragreen @Constababble
Take them to a puppet show / the zoo or some other special experience.
Or buy them things they really need (clothes, school supplies or sports equipment)
@Constababble the spirit of bloomin’ Christmas, guess it would shorten my trip I suppose. #Christmas
@Constababble Agreed that with my brother and sister-in-law. And we do secret Santa amongst the other half's family. I often ask for donations to foodbanks instead of gifts.

@Constababble
As much as I love this idea, people do get joy out of giving.

So, here's 3 alternatives to nothing:

- Give a handmade gift. If you're not particularly creative, grow a small plant, fix something or watch some online videos on how to cook/sew/create something)

- Give an experience (think yoga / language / art class, tickets to a game or concert, massage etc.)

- Make a personalised card with drawings / pressed flowers / photos and write in it a story about something you've shared or done with that person.

You can celebrate occasions with sharing, without buying a lot of STUFF.
