I have given one man immense power over my social media life:

@ruud

Nope, not the wealthiest man in the world! But Ruud Schilders is doing a wealth of good running mastodon.world with good equipment and policies.

I hope my WSJ Mastodon guide helps people understand this community and the role trust + information plays in picking a server.

Can You Leave Twitter and Still Get Twitter? Try Mastodon.

As Elon Musk takes over Twitter, many are checking out this alternative. It could be the future of social media—if you can figure it out.

@joannastern I don’t have a WSJ subscription, is there a way to read it without it? (I’m only interested in your work Joanna, huge fan).
@CarlosSierraOz @joannastern Yes, I'd love to read this but it's behind a paywall.
@CarlosSierraOz @joannastern I don’t have a subscription either but I X’d out of the subscription overlay box and then selected Show Reader (that Aa at the top of the screen) and I could access it.
@ruud @joannastern I’m very curious to see how #eternalseptember plays out when the sports fans and comedians join.

@joannastern @ruud

I am here because of your article. Thanks Joanna!

@joannastern My hope is that over time people and _institutions_ will start treating instances more and more like email. We already have the MIT Mastodon server (mastodon.mit.edu), and the one from the European Commission (social.network.europa.eu). That deals with a lot of the trust issues.

@joannastern Thank you for this! New to Mastodon so this was very useful in sussing out how things worked.

@joannastern
I can't read the article, but the tone of your post makes me wonder if you understand the role instances, and their admins, play in your ability to exist on the Fediverse.

If you, for whatever reason, feel that you'd be better served on another instance/server, then you can make that happen. And you would still have a social media presence.

But your point about the quality of instance and admin Mastodon.World and @ruud comprise, is spot on! :)
