Public Patreon update about .art's policy regarding the instances we federate with (and stop federating with / fediblock).

I've changed one line there. If the community vibe on .art is that you, the users here, would rather we defederate with them, we'll do that.
@Curator If an instance is defederated, can we still follow its users if we wanted to?
@codecat @Curator No. If an instance is defederated entirely, you cannot interact in any way with any users or activity on that instance.
@codecat Defederated, no - silenced, yes (silencing is also an option - posts won't show up in public feeds unless you're following that user)
@Curator Silencing would be the preferable option then imo, lots of people's go-to instance is .social and I would be losing a number of good people I'm following :(
@codecat @Curator agreed with you re silencing but i'm a newbie so obvs don't know that much yet about this place (which i'm finding eye-ooening and refreshing btw).
@Curator @codecat This might be the better option for now, since many new folks just go to the big places like .social first, unless they are following someone else to another instance?
@Curator i would wanna hold my horses for a bit once the big migration has calmed down and see how things will fare. I will definitely go and tell my friends to switch instances. What are some good “non specific” instances for normies that are well moderated?
@foervraengd I am terrible at thinking of stuff like this off the top of my head XD If you want to make a public post asking for instance recommendations I'll boost it from WP though
@Curator yeah yeah ill do that!
@Curator I' ll rather have the freedom to communicate to any instance to be honest.
@BKLronin Sure, but you don't have that currently here anyway. Here's the list of instances we block. https://mastodon.art/about/more#unavailable-content

@Curator Ok when I see the various reasons I totally support those blocks but its also important that this list exists so we know whats blocked.
@BKLronin Yeah, the block lists for most instances are public on their /about pages ^.^
@BKLronin @Curator
I think if there are instances that don't block any other instances at all, they would have to be run by Nazis and adjacent "rules against racism/sexism/etc are censorship!" people
@Anke @Curator True, I haven´t seen what kind of servers exist before. I thought the fediverse is just a clean and smart place by itself but that seems to be the merit of the mods instead.

@Curator thank you for this. One of the reasons I'm really happy to be on .art is I know there is a thoughtful approach to blocking domains which has kept fascists and assholes largely out of my mentions.

I am worried about the situation at .social but it seems like defederating right now while so many folk are still finding their feet might be quite bad for people -- and I know lots of cool people still on there that I still hope will move on.

Might be something for the future though.

@vicorva yeah. Silencing is also an option which is a potentially good middle ground. But I've put it out there to see what people say ^.^

@Curator true.

You are doing a great job.

@vicorva @Curator truer words have never been spoken
@Curator I'm on .social just now but looking to migrate to .art as soon as it reopens (when will that likely be btw?) but if I'm still on .art and you were to defederate, would I still be able to migrate? Or would I be locked out? 🤔

@Curator I'd vote holding off for now to see where things go. As others have said, if it becomes a problem silencing would be preferable to defederating so I'm not cutoff from my follows there.

Sidenote: every time I read defederate I keep wanting to read it in my head as defenestrate.

@tonydelgado I am a big fan of defenestration. :D
@Curator @tonydelgado Oh yes the old Czech tradition is throwing bad leaders from the window. We should return someday. Cause tradition is sacred, isn't it 😅
@Curator how're you feeling about mstdn.social? I might shift my butt over there.

@ifixcoinops I don't know if the situation has improved. I moved from mstdn to masto.ai another instance run by the same admin because it was struggling to keep up. The timelines were often delayed by an hour or so just due to the over 100k users.

Was a great instance prior to the current onslaught of users, and even while sluggish it was still a bunch of good-natured folks. Masto.ai is much the same just smaller and faster currently.

@Belghast Cheers for the rec, I was wondering more about the federation/defederation/silencing status but a smaller server does sound more like the way to go
@ifixcoinops on defed concerns, I never ran into any issues with mstdn. I was able to follow people freely on all of the servers that I tried. I am sure someone out there is probably blocking them but I never found it.
@Curator If they're not a nazi server (if I understood correctly, the issue is lack of control+federating w/ bad actors, not *being* a bad actor) I vote for silencing rather than defederating so I can still follow people there.

@Curator

I'm in the group for silencing instead of defederation unless harassment starts happening.

@Curator I'd prefer silencing it. I have friends who've been there for a long time, thru multiple migrations, and would prefer to keep contact with them if another solution is possible.

I understand if it gets to a point where it isn't anymore but would hope we try other solutions first.

@Curator Thanks for the well considered approach and update! To agree with others - this is seems like the right call for the moment.

The fediverse will probably look quite different in a month or two if the migration continues.

@Curator Thanks for the insight!

I think silencing would be a good way, if it's getting worse with the tone over there. 🤔
