Institutional #Scicomm-ers, are you recommending your colleagues to enter Mastodon? Are you moving your institutional account here?

I've expressed my personal opinion on the issue. May be a bit rash to ask for immediate change, but I simply do not see Twitter as a safe, reliable, operational platform to use for scholarly networking. The critical mass at Mastodon (for my field) has been reached. This is a good time to join & introduce oneself!

@drlynnchiu I think the followon question from this may be "do you think that institutions should be running instances for their staff & students?"
@simon_on_energy That's a great question! My immediate reaction is no if it's an academic institution geared towards academics. In most cases, academics do not tie their identities to their institutions. Instance name is a form of identity. Also, Unis are too diverse for the local timeline to be relevant. Undergrads is a diff story... (esp sport unis that cultivate tribal identities)
@drlynnchiu hmm, interesting. I'd love to see instances by field - so I could hang out with energy folks for example - but I'd take institutional colleagues as second choice. But I take your point about having it tied to the institution.
