I sincerely believe that charging money for using the bird site isn't an inherently bad idea. However, I would be hard-pressed to do so under the present circumstances.
But, to put my money where my fingers are, I did sign up for my Mastodon server's Patreon.
Let's remember, running a server takes time and money, and I doubt anyone is getting paid. So, let's help them out a bit.

@Matthewmuses To be fair. You're not *paying* to use Twitter... you would only be paying for a blue checkmark. Lots of sites do this for supporters..

The real issue people seem to be having is the 'elite club' is closing.

@quickgate The latest talk is they're considering a paywall, so it's possible we'd have to pay to use it.

@Matthewmuses I doubt that'll happen. Musk being pro first amendment. He's also said many times he plans to keep the general site, free.

But I guess we will just wait and see.

Personally I like Mastodon as it's open source, anyone can run their own federated instance. This makes censorship slightly harder, which is awesome!
