So I get that mastodon is trying to break away from "one big corporate entity controlling the main server". But I feel like the biggest issue for newcomers is giving their trust to "a random server that might close one day".
I know it wouldn't be possible because of money concerns, but what if there was one central server with subcommunities that all communicate with each other, think interconnected discord servers?

@tducasse I think the best security is hosting your own personal instance, but that’s of course not feasible for everyone! Other instances do at least temporarily save toots from their known network, so some data is in multiple places in case of a catastrophic failure of one instance…
@riverforgegames agree, it would be the safest option. Kind of what secure scuttlebutt does, if I'm not mistaken.
But then you'd lose what I love about mastodon: I can decide to _not_ follow anyone, go to "Local", and see lots of relevant stuff
@tducasse yes! Someone should fix that. For instance, it would be very cool to be able to opt in to include another instance or instances in your local feed, and to cross post your own toots to other instances, that way you always have your own thing secure but you’re not excluded from the communities you want to engage with.
@riverforgegames I think they have a way to follow hashtags coming up in the next version, which would definitely be a great way to solve the issue, at least for me!
Another way to solve it would be at the instance level, some sort of "I want this instance to subscribe to this other instance" checkbox. Not sure how involved it would be network wise though, because you'd basically be duplicating another instance 🤔
