In always any discussion of the political tenor the country, “the country” is played by a few well-placed counties. And some loud, often violent, acts of subterfuge and terrorism.

The actual country is majority Democratic, majority pro-choice, majority non-violent, majority sane. We can’t get used to minority rule.

@virginiaheffernan One can make a pretty good case that ‘minority rule’ was exactly the nation that the Founders (rip) intended. OTOH, don’t think they were envisioning what we’ve become 230 years later, like Hamilton wouldn’t believe that $ is default world currency.

@wndlb @virginiaheffernan

I don't think there's any question that the founders intended minority rule (by themselves and people like them, natch).

Female? Non-white? Sorry can't vote.

Poor white male? Probably can't vote either.

And even within this restricted electorate, the Senate was selected by state legislatures and intended to moderate the passions of the masses.

Let's not even mention the electoral college.

Decent compared to contemporary alternatives, but not majority rule.

@virginiaheffernan We've had minority rule for years. Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, those states with fewer ppl get the same number of senators that big states like California, Texas and New York get. That needs to be remedied. If your state has 20M+ people, you should get more elected reps than a state with 700K people. The Constitution is flawed in that the founders clearly could not envision what we have today.
