I want to point out that there's a difference between funding mastodon software (the developers) and mastodon instances (administration and server cost).
I would suggest funding both. If you can only afford one consider funding the instance admins first.

I guess most people here prefer to pay directly to the bank account or use liberapay and similar sites instead of patreon because they don't want to support surveillance capitalism.
Patreon is commercial/proprietary, centralized and uses tracking:
