I'm so confused. Why are there some people I can just click and follow and for others it tells me I need to sign in again?
(But I *did* follow some people on other servers just by clicking their names. That's what threw me...) Anyway, I think I now know going forward you need to put their entire handle into the search bar and you can follow that way. You can't, say, just search for their surname.
@jmendelsohn Here's what I think happened: you followed a web link to the person you wanted to follow who lives on, say, mastodon.social. That's a different server than yours, and you don't have an account there. It's a bit confusing for sure - but you're right that the way to follow them is putting their handle (@name@server) in the search bar on YOUR server, and then you can view their profile and follow.
@jmendelsohn I was able to find you just by starting to type your handle and it resolved correctly. I clicked on your username, confirmed it was correct and followed you.
@jmendelsohn , Hi just thought I'd pass this along as I found it easy to follow many of the great journalists and lawyers I followed at the 'other place' https://journa.host/@WalterShaub/109305403424338910

@jmendelsohn
Probably a bad explanation, but: Anyone on your instance @journa.host will let you follow immediately because you are already signed into @journa.host, when you try to follow people on other instances it wants to know which account you are using to follow (so it forces you to type in your username and @journa.host again)
@jmendelsohn what I do is put the user’s full handle in the search box. They should come up. Then just click on the search results.
@jmendelsohn because they are on other servers and you need to tell their sever which server you came from so your accounts can be linked across servers. Look at me knowing things after just a few days 😁
@jmendelsohn You can only click to follow people on your own server. To follow people on other servers, copy their full address into the search box.
@jmendelsohn Another consideration is that some users made their settings to approve new followers. So, when you review your list of who you follow, any new follow request may not show on your list, yet. The new follow request will be listed as Pending until they approve you. Confusing.
