@severalsins The only reason it feels like that is because of all the new people. I think most people tend to be more formal when they first arrive somewhere new.

Mastodon has never been at all formal. I see no reason for us to start now.

The traditional word for a Mastodon post is a "toot", which hopefully gives you a good sense of the formality level.
