I'm only starting now to get a feel for how the multi-instance ecosystem works. Got an update for our instance admin noting how they can block instances that tend to drive trolls/hate speech, whatever. Fascinating to see how this all works in practice. the approach of your instance admin clearly is pretty key to how you experience the broader Mastodon ecosystem.
@joshtpm the more I learn about it, the more I like it.
@Relayer @joshtpm Twitter for all it's revenue, could not employ enough moderators to contain the trolls since the whole thing was built without these kind of silos/instances. It is remarkable how well it works from what I have seen so far. Time will tell with the influx.
@joshtpm Yeah, it's pretty cool. Mastodon also depends on users reporting, blocking and making it a great place
@joshtpm Yep, except you can up and move to another server any time you want (and take your followers with (but not your old posts)).
@joshtpm I was worried it would be to siloed. Like discord. I like discord for that reason but I didn't need 2 of those. The interconnectivity of the instances takes some getting use to but I really like how there are different eco systems that exist by themselves but are also connected to the larger eco system. You get the safety and sanity of your group (instance) but can still interact with everyone else.
@joshtpm for that reason I believe it's just a matter of months before newsorgs, businesses, academics start putting up their own servers. They can have the same worldwide reach but with a better control of what they put out and of the discussion. For example, academics should be able to organize a 24/7 worldwide workshop format place that is both open for all to see but policed so experts can have constructive interactions.
@bexzex This sounds very promising
@joshtpm The admin/moderation is everything. Fortunately most are open about their blocklists and freely share lists & reasons.
@joshtpm Since Tom Fitton seems to be managing Twitter, it's better to be here.
@joshtpm All I heard was “the sovereign individuals” are in charge
