I am way more excited about this Mastodon experience than I expected to be. Some nostalgic hope here—as at the dawn of email, gopher, Usenet, and the Web—for what's possible. 🎉

The pandemic has pounded home to me that we humans can hose up anything. But sometimes we work together to bring forth wonders, too. May this unexpected social-media emergence keep being a wonder.

Kudos to all the geeks who readied the infrastructure for this moment.

@themaikimo I unironically still want to host a gopher:// server. I have only avoided it so far because I don't post enough long form text.
@timClicks @themaikimo Have you checked out the Geminispace (if your want a bit of that gopher feel)?
@wviechtb @themaikimo Yes, I've read the Gemini spec, but I find the format too minimalist and I know that I would end up hating it if I tried to publish content there.
@timClicks @themaikimo Fair enough - have similar thoughts but I like the idea in principle. I guess it's a bit of longing for the old days where we were 'surfing on the information highway' and before commercial interests took over.
@themaikimo same here! Feels like going back to a wonderful community that I barely realized had been lost through many years of centralization and commercial interests.

@themaikimo Hi James. You are so right. There is something very genuine about this place. I love it so far ❤️ I hope things are going better for you and your family post-pandemic. It has been so hard for me but I'm getting there :-)

Very warm toot btw. I've added you. If you like my profile please consider doing the same.

@themaikimo I feel the same the same! My hope for the next few years is an expansion of the ActivityPub protocol and a revival of RSS
@themaikimo I agree! Feels like the '90s again 😁
@themaikimo agree, I'm really starting to enjoy using it, still finding my way around but getting there
