It feels like my networks are hitting a phase transition moment. My twitter timeline is devolving while my mastodon timeline fills up with the research/programming/paper sharing I previously liked.

And of course it feels like Neal Stephenson wrote about this ten years ago

@hayesall the Stephenson moment that sticks with me was in Neuromancer we learn that your avatar in the virtual world was based on how much compute your own system provided.

That seems obviously absurd until I saw different responsiveness from different Mastodon servers…

@danyel Neuromancer has been on my TBR stack for way too long. This boosted it up a few places in line.
@hayesall um, so about that wish for an edit button. Neuromancer is a great book by William Gibson. Snowcrash, however, is the Stephenson I was thinking of.

@danyel Ohh, I thought that one sounded familiar. I mix up details from Snowcrash and Diamond Age periodically, some of the science fiction blends together.

I'm keeping it higher on the list still, I love a good sci-fi recommendation 😄
