Is there a reason why we shouldn’t set up a Cville Mastodon instance?
@griesar I’ve been hoping somebody would do that. If it were 2008, I’d do it, but [checks calendars] here’s hoping somebody else will.
@waldoj yeah where’s the FE02 type collective in cville today we can support?
@waldoj you’re not a mastochist
@waldoj @griesar A couple friends and I are setting up an instance for the aviation community. Hosting costs are covered ‘cause…um…well, we know a guy. ;)
@griesar I would be all over that. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to make it happen.
@JenB @griesar
Basic approach is
(A) find where like this to host https://federation.spacebear.ee/software/mastodon
(B) invite people you know are actually in Cville
(C) if it gets traction, setup a Patreon (or some such) so people can do an easy monthly pitch-in to cover the hosting costs
(D) do administrator tasks like blocking spam/troll accounts and servers

@stevenljohnson @JenB seems like the thing news orgs should consider. A dailyprogress, cville, or cvilletomorrow instance makes sense to me.
@griesar @stevenljohnson @JenB @waldoj I would support this financially and pitch in for shifts at moderating and what not, but I don’t want to end up on the hook 100% for a “community” resource, as we all know can happen. It would be nice for the “local” feed to actually be local

@Runkefer @griesar @JenB @waldoj Ditto... I feel the same way and would be willing to support it in a similar way. I've also done site moderation before and know what a time suck it can become.

FWIW, there's already a Cville reddit, a Cville slack, and a Cville discord... which suggests there's an interest in locally-focused online meeting spaces

@stevenljohnson @Runkefer @griesar @waldoj

Same here. I'm happy to be part of a team and help however I can.

@stevenljohnson @Runkefer @griesar @JenB I ran cvilleblogs.com a million years ago, running local meetups of bloggers, encouraging folks to start by giving them an instant audience via that aggregator. I miss the sense of local, online community that came from that shared space. A local Mastodon community could be that.
@griesar @stevenljohnson @JenB @waldoj Yes, I remember that. Makes a lot of sense
@stevenljohnson @waldoj @griesar @JenB An interesting article about the resources needed for even one very popular person on a given server: https://ar.al/2022/11/09/is-the-fediverse-about-to-get-fryed-or-why-every-toot-is-also-a-potential-denial-of-service-attack/
Is the fediverse about to get Fryed? (Or, “Why every toot is also a potential denial of service attack”)

Every time I post something that gets lots of engagement, I essentially end up carrying out a denial of service attack on myself. What does this say about the design of Mastodon and ActivityPub and the future of the fediverse?

@Runkefer @waldoj @griesar @JenB Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that—it is really interesting to read. I'm close to biting the bullet and creating a cville Mastodon server.

First step is picking a domain name. After that, getting mastodon setup on a hosting service... if masto.host was accepting new customers, I'd use them... since they aren't, I'm leaning towards using digitalocean and managing a few more details myself.

@Runkefer @waldoj @griesar @JenB Then I'll work on migration instructions as well as brand-new-to-Mastodon instructions... and then open things up to anyone in the Cville area.

If anyone is interested in helping out with any of those steps, please send me an email (steven.l.johnson [at] gmail.com) and let me know how you can help!

@stevenljohnson @Runkefer @waldoj @griesar

Thanks Steven. I have absolutely zero technical skills but I do want to contribute to the costs of making this happen.

@JenB @Runkefer @waldoj @griesar Thanks, Jen.

If it all goes well and I can make this happen, I'll open up some kind of tip jar for others to help defray costs... esp. if it is successful enough to incur any meaningful amount of them. 🙂
