I've been working with the #IoT for something like 15 years now, and today is very much one of those days that can be summed up in 2 quotes; “In a relatively short time we've taken a system built to resist destruction by nuclear weapons and made it vulnerable to toasters” (Jeff Jarmoc) and "Any sufficiently advanced neglect is indistinguishable from malice.”" (Deb Chachra). Because as far as I can make out, those quotes almost entirely describe what the IoT has become. This is not a good thing.
@aallan oh goodness those are both perfect quotes for describing more than just IoT, they work for the entier internet. 😂
The main problem I see, @aallan, is that there was never a good start. Better protocols are being devised now, do you see a potential for recovery?
@juandesant For smart things in the home? I honestly don’t. I was enthusiastic about #Matter for the #IoT, but what’s been released is very obviously compromised in some significant ways.

@aallan I’m a hacker, and from the hacker mindset I’ve been exceptionally wary of “smart devices” not entirely and absolutely under my complete control.

I have a robotic sweeper. I don’t use it much because I don’t like the connectivity its manufacturer mandates and I haven’t fully segmented my home network.

Just my thoughts. :/

@aallan what's the context here? Something happened today?
@gundersen What's the Mastodon equivalent to a subtweet? A #subtoot? That sounds a bit rude. 🤔
