There are so many obvious shortcomings on Mastodon that are cast as advantages. The idea that not having a basic, table stakes search feature will prevent harassment is just silly. "If we keep Mastodon unusable, no one will join, and it won't become Twitter." Maddening.

This is the equivalent of telling people that trying to figure out how to recompile their kernel and get the dumb graphics driver working on Linux is somehow good, actually, because you end up understanding your system better, so everyone should do that.
