the #fediverse / #mastodon is on the front page of CNN right now
https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/05/tech/mastodon/index.html

this influx might be bigger then we realized...

[But Mastodon scratches a certain itch. The service has a similar look to Twitter, with a timeline of short updates sorted chronologically rather than algorithmically. It lets users join a slew of different servers run by various groups and individuals, rather than one central platform controlled by a single company like Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.]
[And while you can follow any other Mastodon user, no matter which server they’ve signed up with, you can only see the lists of who follows your Mastodon friends, or who your Mastodon friends follow, if the followers happen to belong to the same server you’re signed up with (I realized this while trying to track down more people I know who recently signed up).]
[There is a server operated by the nonprofit behind Mastodon, Mastodon.social, but it’s not accepting more users; I’m currently using one called Mstdn.social, which is also where I can sign in to access Mastodon on the web.] hey @stux you got a cnn reporter on ur instance
[But unlike on Twitter, where I can easily interact with a large audience, my Mastodon network is less than 100 followers. Suddenly I had no idea what to post — a feeling that never nags me on Twitter, perhaps because the size of that network makes any post feel less consequential.] ok they dont get it

@liaizon people, considering mastodon: ‘what’s an instance? what do you mean federated? this makes no sense! you mean the admins have access to all the nuts and bolts? you want me to think about how to frobnicate the activitymabop across the fediverse? you have brain worms!’

those same people: ‘how does my personality the brand, when the brand, branding reach, an audience and content engagement, drops every wednesday, with the brand, while branderizing, and myself?’

@gekitsu this just made me audibly laugh out loud
@liaizon aww, full success! :D (and i even forgot to wedge ‘like, comment, and subscribe’ in there)
@liaizon >Suddenly I had no idea what to post
Then don't post anything, thanks bye
oh also ht to @rune for posting about this article first
@liaizon That’s wrong, you have to open the profile on its own instance.
@liaizon You can just browse their public profiles on their server; linked from their profile pic

@jim yes very aware of that. I was quoting the article who obviously didnt do much researy
@liaizon haha! oh dear.😂
@liaizon I even got a push notification from Wired magazine about the Fediverse news on my phone!

@jamie @liaizon Nice typo #mastadon.

I don't know why native english speakers always make that one.

#mastodon

@julien @liaizon It's how it's often pronounced with an American accent
@jamie @julien how do you get an article on the front of wired without spellcheck tho?
@liaizon you can tag the journalist for this story, she's on Mastodon at @rachelmetz. ;)
@julien oh thanks! Hey @rachelmetz hows it going? there are a few inaccuracies in your cnn article, anyway we could make some updates?
@liaizon @julien hi! If you can tell me what’s incorrect (here or at [email protected]) I can take care of it.
@liaizon The people fleeing twitter are in for a culture shock. I expect that some of them are going to flee back to twitter because of it. Some will also flee back due to not getting the dopamine hit that they would normally get from twitter. But we'll see how bad it is in a few months.
@liaizon Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed.
@liaizon I am a Twitter survivor.
@liaizon that article is how I found Mastadon! 🙂
@JenniferEss wow! well welcome, this is probably the first time I have ever read an entire cnn article (I usually find their website unbearable) but glad it brought you here and you ended up finding a smaller instance to join
@liaizon I hate CNN so very much but this is going to increase the exodus from Twitter since people will start knowing about an alternative. Apparently, Mastodon was in the evening news in Germany which has caused a massive influx of german users as well as many more local german instances. I think some more US-based instances would be good for catching the mass of people deciding to try it out because of this post.
@liaizon
Slight bit of oversimplification on the followers list thing, but fairly accurate article - I'm glad the major press aren't doing a hatchet-job.
@liaizon its been on the bbc in the UK as well
@liaizon I see signed up as soon as I read https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/05/tech/mastodon. I cancelled my Twitter account when I read Musk re-twitted conspiracy nonsense about Paul Pelosi.
