While there are guides on how to set up your own Mastodon instance, I am yet to see a guide on if you should set up your own instance. Has anybody seen one?

@Tenzer I've seen a few people recommending it, but obviously that then comes with the burden of having to maintain it. Some folk say Pleroma is easier to set up and maintain and lighter weight.

@jamesog I would be running it on my NixOS server at home. It doesn't look that difficult to configure there from what I can see, so I might give that a try

@laszlocph I've seen that one as well. I'm not sure that fits what I'm thinking of that well since I probably would run an instance basically for myself (because I can) and whatever bots I might create rather than running an instance for an entire community
