He overplayed, but not by more than just what was need to get control of twitter and looked like a fool and now is wrecking havoc with everything that kept Twitter more or less like a place that trolls could not completely overrun, under the guise of cutting costs and making people pay certification.
Which makes no sense compared with the money in advertising.
This is not about money.

@wijksel @sethpicturesmusic unsure. The new feature about adding context or signaling unhelpful posts can actually make Twitter more or less livable without centralized monitoring. But by axing also the team that looked into crowd manipulation, Elon Musk is making sure that paid for bots can have an influence. Which they already did in 2016.
