So how does this work? How does one follow and gain followers, how does one search what's going on. (Forgive me I'm not very tech savvy) does this work like the old bluebird before Mr billionaire had to go buy the thing?

@ilario23 Pretty much like very, very old-school Twitter. Like, pre-2010 Twitter.

If you watch the Local timeline you'll see people's public posts (like this one); if you see someone interesting, give them a follow. You can search for hashtags as well if you're looking for people posting about a particular topic (though that does depend on people using hashtags; I'm pretty terrible at it).

If you're using the Mastodon app, it's apparently missing a number of features - I use Tusky for Android, but there are a few around.

@ilario23 Debirdify will search the twitter accounts you follow to find posted Mastodon accounts.

Use twitodon.com to register your account in a database, which allows others twho visit it to find you.

Add your account name, as your account name on that bird site, to help people find you here.

@SuperMoosie thank you that was helpful even if only a small number have moved over to here
