As a patron of Mastodon, I have access to the Discord with other instance maintainers. Chatting with @Gargron , it sounds like the big issue with .social is they need to do a DB server upgrade, but their host is taking a long time to provide the upgrade (holiday in Germany?).

If you're on mastodon.social, please hang tight. It will get better, but it'll take time.

If you're suggesting new servers for friends, suggest mastodon.online for now. It's a smaller instance, run by the same group.

Funds go to the dev team coding up Mastodon, who are the same team that run the .social and .online (and joinmastodon.org) instances.

This influx of users comes with a lot of new maintenance costs for them, and they aren't getting ad revenue like Twitter does.

@smitty @Gargron If I am suggesting something to new people, I recommend that they choose not necessarily mastodon and if they do, not necessarily the biggest servers. Don't let decentralisation be an empty word. There is a really great choice: https://fedidb.org/software
