Lotographia@sarahhbickerton @bootstheory There's been at least one person who felt unsafe because of the behaviour of an admin on mastodon.nz, they migrated to cloudisland and I'm considering doing the same. I know and trust the admins of cloudisland, have no idea who the admins of mastodon.nz are.

@PeterAranyi Yeah, people seem split mostly between the .nz and the .social ones.

Mastodon.social is and will always be overstuffed, and because of this, loosely moderated and plagued by server overload when it gets busy.
Other options:
* Get a few folks together, with at least one geeky friend, create your own new instance, and set your own house rules
* Get a free account on mastodon.nz, mastodon.nzoss.nz, or pixelfed.nz (for photo+blogging)
* Pay to join cloudisland.nz

@bootstheory NZ based is good. I moved to mastodon.nz from another instance and this feels more like "home". Cloudisland.nz seems like good idea, especially for those interested in tech or security. Probably more of us on MNZ because Free is a lower level of commitment. And better fit for those on limited budgets too
Rochelle@bootstheory Cloud Island is NZ owned & all your data is stored in NZ. Aurynn’s a great admin. It’s great having a responsive admin who looks out for her people.
A lot of people choose MNZ bc it’s free.
