I saw someone inspecting an elevator and asked if I could watch. He went on to explain all kinds of cool things about the elevator, like that it had 6 cables and that any single one of them was rated to hold the whole thing. It also has big hydraulic shock absorbers underneath just in case. Sometimes people tell him to hurry up so they can use it again, but I’m ok with him taking his time.

People often love telling you about what they’re doing if you’re willing to ask. Stay curious!

@tek The person fixing our dishwasher and sink a little while ago took the time to explain about air gaps and looping the hose and how a garbage disposal works - we really appreciated it

@tek I'm jealous, I've seen stuff online that goes over all the safety features on elevators (seriously, something like a dozen things must simultaneously work correctly or it will just lock in place rather than move) but I've never got to watch it in person.
@tek Once a year I open the door for the person who inspects the elevator to the basement of our church. He told me lots about how it works! Also, we're both calendar geeks :-)
@tek not in countries with meagre minimum wages, where the repair guy has to achieve 'target' of n number of repairs. so yeah, good he got the time to explain.
and it is usually the case that one elevator does provide service to more than one person (unless you are Lucifer from Netflix), so how come no one else was pushing the repairs to get done faster?
@tek customer's child, upon seeing me inside the guts of a computer: can I ask a question?
brain: OH HELL YES!
@tek I would boost this twice if I could.
