i have a letterboxd list called "from every year i've been here" where i choose my favourite film from each year i've been alive in and it's not been updated for ages and it turns out some years are weirdly difficult to decide
i'm still updating it but think i'm settled upto 2012, maybe i'll post about one a day so as not to clog up the tl
okay so i guess here lies the start of my thread about my fave films from each year i have been alive on this earth
1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣9️⃣
the year of my birth give us The Abyss
easily my fave james cameron but exactly not his most well received is it.
combines my enjoyment of the deep sea, aliens and general spooky business with x-files in the ocean vibes. i genuinely love it and think it's really incredible from a technical standpoint, even if some of the very end looks a little bit silly for sure.
given jcs love of the deep sea and all the cool new technology that exists in the world i would absolutely love a new deep sea feature from him. but, from everything i've heard about it, it was an absolute horrible time to film for literally everyone involved so perhaps not
also this was my twitter header for years, j'adore, maybe i'll use it here too

film 2 is trust, which is the only hal hartley movie i've ever seen and also one of the greatest films of all time
i think the reason i haven't watched any of his others is that i worry they'll pale in comparison to how this makes me feel when i watch it, which is everything. adrienne shelly is an angel and there's babby edie falco too!

next up is massive classic boyz n the hood
rip in piece john singleton thanks for making an extremely good movie
i guess i don't really have a great deal of explanation for this one, it's just really good and thirty year old laurence fishburne is such a babe and that's worth mentioning
i don't intend to do this for every year but 1991 gets two honourable mentions, barton fink and delicatessen bc in this house we love the coens and jean-pierre jeunet
oh i forgot about this thread lemme pick it back up!!!

this is obviously candyman for me. one of my favourite horrors ever 🐝🐝🐝🐝
tony todd is an incredible villain in this, his voice is so calm and beautiful whilst he's being so menacing. obv all the bee stuff is incred but the thing for me is that i haven't seen many horrors where the antagonist just straight up ruins his victim's life. stressful in the best way
and maybe it's cringe now but i remember being absolutely obsessed with this shot
sorry for neglecting laserdisc but am bringing this thread back friends
1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣3️⃣
the age of innocence
this might be sacrilege on lp but i think this is my favourite scorsese
based on one of my fave novels, michelle pfeiffer and winona in GOWNS, the sets and costumes are all absolutely delicious and there's so much yearning
in this house we love a fancy gown and some old fashioned yearning
when this was made miriam margolyes was only about two years older than winona is now i love the past
1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣4️⃣
couldn't be anything but muriel's wedding for me here. abba karaoke lightyears before mamma mia
also toni colette and rachel griffiths are simply incredible actors and i adore them

it is with no sense of irony that i say my favourite film from 1995 is hackers.
it is a time capsule of a movie, the most 90s thing to ever exist. the plot is nonsense but every outfit is a masterpiece and the scene where fisher stevens does a shady deal and then rollerblades off through a cloud of steam info the night? high art imo
@ghostsandguts I watched Hackers for the first time earlier this year and I’ll say it again, I’m jealous of all the teens about 5 years younger than me who had that movie fall into their laps at *exactly* the right moment
@ItsTheManOnTheMoon oh for sure, i only saw it about 5 years ago and desperately wished to also be that age in the 90s
@ghostsandguts it’s mine too!!!!! It’s like a moving painting 🥰 so much pining 😍😍
@neoncoughh yeahhhh i'm so glad other ppl love it, i'm still absolutely livid there wasn't any direct references at the met gala it was perfectly on theme
