@ItsSheVee I cam over during that Tumblr nonsense back in 2019.
@Some_Emo_Chick ah that makes sense. Death of another once-great network
@ItsSheVee Over all, I like it here. It's a good community and fairly friendly.
@ItsSheVee was young and needed the money should be an option
@aRubes how do you mean?
@ItsSheVee in a funny way
@aRubes centralized social Networks hate this one weird trick! 😜
@ItsSheVee I was lonely and I didn't wanna be on the centralised corporate shit.
@ItsSheVee Came here earlier, but the newest wave of accounts and activity is really nice.
@0xReki kinda same. I came originally in 2017 when it first went public and I was really excited but felt like I wasn't finding enough people. Excited again to see where things go with this big influx of users
@ItsSheVee I'm not so excited about those freedom gatekeepers — it's the worst aspect of any FOSS community. Sure, there's some truth to it, but it kills the notion people over here are more friendly.
@0xReki are there people here who would prefer "others" would stay away? I haven't encountered that yet
@ItsSheVee Some very vocal people unconditionally want to remove any crossposters.
@0xReki that's lame. Let people live
@ItsSheVee algorithm
@jeroen good point! Chronological timeline is where it's at!
@ItsSheVee
I chose to go to Mastodon instead of Twitter almost five months ago, because I didn't want to end up in a toxic pile of people and really liked the idea behind Mastodon and the whole fedi. Also it is open-source and the people here are just lovely!
@MagicLike hard to argue with that!!
@ItsSheVee I left Facebook years ago and I'm trying off and on to set up a more controlled, more private web presence.
@babble_endanger definitely understand that. My partner has basically zero online presence and I have to appreciate it
@ItsSheVee data souvereignity
@bastian interested in your thoughts there. Do you run your own server?
@ItsSheVee no, a really nice club does it for me and for just one Euro a month.
From their name I suspect they care about the same issues, its called #digitalcourage 😘
@ItsSheVee @fredrik all of Them?
@maiathecyberwitch @fredrik also valid! I realized after I had already posted I should have tried to allow multiple answers but it's also interesting in knowing people's primary reason
@ItsSheVee @fredrik to me 1 and 2 are intertwined, Elon will slacken moderation, and that was what finally Got me back on here, but I also love the Nature of the fediverse and how we can build our own feed instead of being Force-fed an by an intransparant algorithmic one, were not Exploited and datamined and sold to 3rd parties, and as an admin I have moderation power to protect my community. Also there are so many wonderful, helpful and interesting people on here,
@maiathecyberwitch @fredrik i don't disagree, but I don't know that everyone necessarily sees it that way. I think for some, Elon is enough reason by himself
@ItsSheVee @fredrik I think you’re absolutely right, he’s also plenty reason for me tbh, especially given how his insufferable fanboys are gonna go wild now
@ItsSheVee Love of open PROTOCOLS and a decentralized Internet!
@elb good point! And yes!
@ItsSheVee @elb +1 for open protocol(s). That's what enables all the different clients on all those platforms, different servers fitting different use-cases and/or communities but all connected together. And no single entity can take away the features people find useful because they can always start using a different client and/or server. I always found institutions, companies etc. depending on and promoting the centralized services extremely short-sighted.
@ItsSheVee All of the above. Plus I hate the feed manipulation on the bird site, and promoted tweets related to bullshit like crypto currency
@ruari god, yes. Please don't let crypto nonsense come over here 🙏
@ItsSheVee I felt like social media was too addictive, toxic and wanted to try something different. I am not disappointed and I am glad to be on a social media that treats me as a human and not as a data cattle.
@louisrcouture that was the reason I deactivated my Facebook account years ago. Went back to connect with old friends but I basically never look at it
@ItsSheVee Word of mouth, and a bit of FOSS love (if it was proprietary, like Discord that I discovered the same way, I wouldn’t have jumped in (so I don’t use Discord)).
@ItsSheVee Saw some mutuals on birdsite checking the place out, and I was the only one from that group who stayed.
@Ronflaix welcome! Very cool that you have community here already!
@ItsSheVee All of them? Was already here, but this place came alive since Elon made his offer. Hoping it keeps growing when he finally withdraws that offer in half a year.
@cimeryd yeah I think the deed is done at this point. Hopefully this will start to be a primary home for more folks

@ItsSheVee It's less than certain. There's a fair chance, if Tesla stock dips further, that financing really becomes an obstacle for him. Or if Twitter stock dips, since after the merger that's what secures his bank loans.

I can't competently summise it in 500 characters, but the Opening Arguments podcast just did a great 2-part breakdown of the various pitfalls.

@cimeryd oh sorry I agree with that. I meant I don't think people will go back to Twitter if the deal falls through (breakup fee is $1B though so he might do everything he can to keep it alive now)
@ItsSheVee Inadvertently because of Elon, I guess. I've wanted to get into Mastadon for a long time and have tried once or twice, but there were relatively very few users. I heard people were flocking here in droves after Elon bought the bird app, so I came back. Turns out there's a pretty sweet community here. :)
@ADHDefy I would say my story is similar. I've had my account(s) since the project went public but now that there has been such a surge in users I'm gonna try to be more active
@ItsSheVee i don't want to be the product for a corporation
@ItsSheVee how about all of the above???
@rebekahkohlhepp I think many would agree with you! But still fun to see what people will pick as the most important
@ItsSheVee

I wanted to read more personal blogs.
@thebiologist1117 is there a lot of that here? Anyone you would recommend?
@ItsSheVee

You can check out these three:
@frankie, @lydiaconwell, and @DavidBlue. 😊

I haven't found too many personal blogs on the fediverse itself, but I have found links to blogs elsewhere on the web here.

#fedifollows
@ItsSheVee can't remember... someone told me years ago to take a look and i did. and now i have my own instance...
@igwigg i love that that's an option if you want to take control of your data but you can still fully participate with that larger fediverse
@ItsSheVee yes! and it's great that there are so many options. if you don't like mastodon, you can switch to misskey or pleroma or something completely else.
@ItsSheVee I like to use my software in an endangered language. Mastodon can be translated freely, Twitter cannot (except for the Cawbird client). So, I got an account here in the sae month that I signed up on Twitter.
@gunchleoc that's a really cool benefit that I had never considered! Glad that you can feel more at home here!
