How do you feel about art that also has a message of environmentalism? I love the idea of solarpunk personally but have found it hard to fully wrap my mind around the aesthetic, it feels too restrictive and too undefined at the same time. It has also been co opted by a certain funged subset of the internet I'd love to forget about.

I do want to keep environmentalist themes in my art though, how do you all feel about this topic?

Adding an aquaponics mermaid sketch I did a while back!

@mulmbot as someone who is a regular on the solarpunk subreddit, it is extremely restrictive and unrealistic. the ppl who believe in it fully don't seem to believe in a transitional stage, and the incremental changes that would need to happen to "achieve" it. they just want solarpunk 100% or nothing. so their vision is unattainable
@nerk Sad to hear this is a prevalent idea! This might be related to what I'm seeing in the artwork too honestly, a lot of it feels very far away in terms of time AND societal change, and then on the other hand we have that lofi aesthetic which is just cute apartments with cute plants, love that one too but it's not reflecting *enough* societal change...it's tough to try and inspire when I can't even inspire myself :')
@mulmbot I think part of the issue is that they're too much about the art, and not about the ideas
@nerk I can kinda see that angle though, I am personally a fan of lunarpunk because it allows for magic and that makes it easier to make an inspiring image :P I've tried to make realistic solarpunk art several times, like designing a sustainable tinyhouse in VR, but I keep lacking the competence in all of these fields like engineering and architecture and environmental science, right ^^
@mulmbot absolutely. and nothing against anyone that is only in it for the art. personally i am a more artistically conceptual person so i think about things beyond the art. and i love technologies such as bitcoin and see how they could greatly improve the energy grid and contribute to a solarpunk future. but don't you dare bring up anything bitcoin in r/solarpunk! trust me...you'll get shunned lol
@nerk Uhh yeah you'll get shunned by me too :P I am very strongly against everything crypto so let's part ways here!

@mulmbot re
"I keep lacking the competence in all of these fields like engineering and architecture and environmental science"

i lack a lot of that as well. we can still create ideas and research and contribute/collaborate.

example. I came up with an idea for a solar-powered BTC mining satellite (now also posted on mastodon). someone with more knowledge actually crunched numbers:

Idea: solar powered bitcoin mining satellite

I've been working this problem for nearly 3 hours. I came up with it independently 3 hours ago and found this thread. 0.133 lbs per watt 2.94...

@nerk I cannot stress enough how much I dislike bitcoin :') I'm not who you think I am!
@mulmbot I know who you are, and who you will be in 20-30 years (if you're still alive-not sure how old you are)
