@andyhoyland I'm self taught but I'm also son of a craftsman which helps a lot because the principles of building are always the same, doesn't matter what you're doing. Woodworking is particular satisfying because it's cheap and easy to start. I need only 7 manual tools: drill, router, circular saw, jag saw, belt sand machine, vibrating sand machine and a grinder. If you buy Einhell tools each of them costs between 50 and 100 euro. Then wood and lots of efforts :-D
@andyhoyland all mentioned above is what you need to make almost anything. A few years ago I made the furniture of an entire apartment with just those tools. It came out rather good and definitely 100 times more robust and durable than furniture you can buy these days (except extraordinary expensive one). Of course with these tools you can get only to a certain degree of precision so anything you build will look a bit chunky and rough.
@andyhoyland To get better results the required tools are much more and definitely more expensive. A bookcase is probably the simplest thing you can think of. If you buy rectified pine wood all you need is meter, manual saw, drill, glue, screws and the belt sanding machine. You can use it as a start project to see if you enjoy working wood.
@andyhoyland last but not least: safety measures. Woodworking tools never forgive: you get distracted and you lose a finger. Always pay respect to router and circular saw. Never forget that those tools can ruin your life. Never put a finger close to blades for any reason. When you really need to get closer to a blade always use a piece of wood.
@andyhoyland additional: noise and splinters. Wear protective glasses and sound protection. For dust, unfortunately there isn't a good solution: masks only partially work. You simply can not wear it all time so refresh the air in your working place as often as possible
@andyhoyland summing up: start cheap, use ready pine wood, don't buy many tools. If you need to do your own furniture because you are a perfectionist freak like me you soon will drop ready wood and start with raw wood which can be found for free (like pallets). Wood is very expensive.
When you are planning your project: never forget that painting wood always take longer than building. If it takes 4 days to build smtg you'll need a week to sand, paint and finish it.
