if you celebrate chr*stmas.... other than your parents making you why do you
if no one replies i'll just assume critical thinking runs out december 25th
@senzubean i dont see my parents a whole lot between uni and other responsibilities, so i see it more as a surefire way to spend some time with my family, as everyone is off work for at least a couple of days. We also dont put a whole lot into the gift giving aspect, as the gifts always have been given from a viewpoint of "we all know none of us has that much money to spare, so let just give something personal and with thought that is within pricerange.". Cont.
@senzubean in short, this holiday hasnt been about presents since i was a child, and ill deffo take the chance to spend time with my family, even though i recognize that the tradition it is built upon is all kinds of problematic
@tuddr so the exact same argument for th*nksgiving then
@senzubean not from the us, so we dont celebrate thanksgiving but i guess?
@tuddr yeah it is the same but also a little worse
@senzubean totally okay if you dont want to, but could you elaborate? Cant quite figure out how it is worse in a christmas context, or what makes the argument a shite one in the first place
@tuddr i'm actually saying th*nksgiving is worse, because it's pointedly more violent against indigenous people even down to the food eaten. chr*stmas isn't as direct but it's still like only for bullshit reasons and really only was good for white people
@senzubean aaaah right just misunderstood then. I personally have very weird relationship with the holiday. Beeing from denmark, it remains as remnents of pan-theistic saturnalia traditions with roots in our ancestral viking culture, then colonized by christianity and brought into a christian context. Ive struggled a whole lot with my christian heritage in general, and only really came to terms with it by conceptualizing jesus as a misinterpreted communist hippie. Cont.
@senzubean the christmas tree for example were originally a symbol of fertility, which people would dance around when fucked up enough on various drugs in the month long drug-orgy. A tradition i like to keep alive by doing drugs with my friends in the immediate days after. So like i have really weird relationship with it in general, some parts of it a cool in regards to pre christian society, other parts stink, but the main reason for me is definitely family
@senzubean really looking forward to your kwanzaa-posting btw
