There is no verified checkmark on Mastodon.
Sometimes I wonder if allowing emoji in display names in the first place was a mistake πŸ˜•
@Gargron So the verified thing is an emoji?  I thought it was real.
@seonghwa Exactly
@Gargron What about an update of https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/profile/ explaining the thing of just emoji and not verified? That's not a perfect solution, but better than no warning at all.

@Carsten_Behrens It literally says β€œDocument-based verification and blue ticks are not possible without a central authority” I doubt that many people read that
@Gargron You are right. I haven't read it. At the beginning I wasn't interested at the headline "Link verification" and skipped it, because I had no link to verify. I would expect an info under the headline "Display name". What about adding: "A display name may contain emojis. No possible emoji means 'document-based verification'. See also section 'Link verification'."
@Gargron @Carsten_Behrens I read that, it meant very little to me, so I ended up in this thread.
Hello. Because no entity either owns or runs Mastodon as a whole, there's no one to actually do any verification. Essentially you need someone to look at at your ID to give you a tick, that person can't exist in Mastodon

@halbpro @Gargron I presumed it was done instance by instance and it was just some badge to be handed out like cookies.

I wanted a cookie.

I didn't expect verification. 😁

@nevercast @Gargron Very tempted to stick a cookie emoji in my name now
