okay but really: Minecraft is way more culturally-relevant to actual kids than Joker from Persona 5 or Banjo and Kazooie are. I understand if you're salty that your fave didn't get a slot but please understand that jaded thirty-somethings are not the actual market for Smash
@hystericempress Honestly this is kind of why when someone went "I wish they'd gone for a better character like Master Chief or Conkers" I couldn't help but go "WTF???" because it's hard to find something MORE relevant than Minecraft out of all the IPs Microsoft owns these days.
@Fringecrow like, we already got Banjo-Kazooie from them, too; they tend not to go past double-dipping on third parties. two Capcom entries, two Microsoft entries, two Sega entries, two Square-Enix entries. I'd say we're much more likely to see something from Namco.

@hystericempress I guess my wonder is how many of the remaining 4 fighters will be first parties VS 3 parties. For example, Pokemon's Gen8 still has no entrant despite Byleth as the latest Fire Emblem character making it in as a DLC of Nintendo's other big franchises.

So the absence of "Gen8 Pokemon or Trainer" kind of feel... weirdly blatant, considering how much bigger Pokemon is as an IP?

@Fringecrow I figure one of the Gen8 starters is probably likely. I would actually call Doomguy a dark horse possibility given the rerelease of Doom 64; everybody who still thinks Geno has a shot is out of their MINDS though.

@hystericempress I'd be surprised by Doom Guy... but then again as you said...

Doom 64 + DOOM/DOOM Eternal both on Switch might be backing enough.

Geno... feels very unlikely, bar something monumental like a re-release or outright remake of Mario RPG being suddenly suddenly release as an out of the blue surprise.

@Fringecrow Geno's not going to happen because he's actually owned by Square-Enix and why would they pay them any extra for licensing when they could get Cloud and Hero, which they did, for the same amount of red tape? If they triple-down on Squenix it's going to be for more Final Fantasy, I guarantee it.

@hystericempress Definitely a good point. But yeah, hence my "unlikely to happen unless for some reason Nintendo+Square Enix bring out something like an outright fullblown 3D remake of Mario RPG proper at the same time and using Geno as a promotional tie-in" which is... unlikely to happen. Ever.

^^;

Like, we'd be talking of a "when pigs will fly" kind of event.
