@xair @artemis effective or not, it's live and it's happening and it's spreading. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that at some point we'll effectively have two networks on the same protocol that don't talk to each other outside of a few single user instances that manage to keep a low profile. Then there really won't be one big Fedi anymore.
@cantinto @artemis @xair this is already happening/has already happened. and reactionary shitwizards don't make it any better.
@purple @cantinto @artemis yeah I know, it already happened, I just think it's stupid and it's even dumber for these people to suddenly turn around and think they could possibly ever expected a distributed network as a whole to follow their set of ideas and rules no matter what they support or believe or how fractured the network becomes
@purple @artemis @xair it's not quite there yet; by my reckoning you've got a sort-of (I hesitate to use the word but it fits) cabal of probably half of the mastodon instances not talking to half of other instances. If you're in either quarter of Fedi the network's gonna look a lot smaller, but really if you're not on a cancelled instance there's still plenty of federation to go around yet. As time goes on though I imagine the problem is only going to get worse, unless the unrealistic scenario happens and we manage to convert more users like me into sysadmins.
suffice to say I don't have the highest hopes.
