Everyone who argues how bad it is that The Goog removed fediverse apps from the play store is missing the main problem here: As long as the majority of people uses one of two walled garden mobile platforms and accept to succumb to the will of the provider, we'll always face such problems. The solution isn't The Goog putting the apps back, the solution is that people stand up against this and start using more open mobile platforms.

Exactly!!! You are the only one I've read today about this controversy who states the real issue. (I've said the same thing on my other account, but not as well)

@normandc I wrote the statement on an mostly (except for microG) de-googled android (https://e.foundation) using an app I installed from F-Droid. So we already found two alternatives. The more people make the move the stronger we become.

@normandc My point isn't that you shouldn't use technologies payed for by major companies. Linux development these days is also funded by major companies like Google, Microsoft or Oracle. Its about using free software and open ecosystems. And ASOP is free software - at least as free as any Linux you can put on your phone. If you go with #Replicant, you even get a freer Android than any other mobile OS.

I understand that Linux development is funded by some large companies, plural. But I'm under the impression that AOSP is funded by a single one, Google. I may be mistaken. If I'm not, Linux mobile is all the more important, because it may be less at risk of being influenced by a single company's agenda... Anyway. I'm not pretending to be an expert. 😃

Already with the #Pinephone, we're seeing a flurry of Linux distros being developed for it. It's a good thing.
