Thinking is not encouraged in applied subjects !
Just do what they say in maths, especially at EXAM time. ;>
ALSO loudly *question and ask* , thats what the teachers there for !
There is usually a sound concept or assumption at work some place deeper down.
Ask to see that exposed and illuminated.
Meanwhile Do the set theory in haskell or erlang .
I like Set Theory but have no deep training..
I tripped over it while learning about Erlang.
