The demand for democratic candidates is so strong that the existing quirks to keep pro-Beijing parties in power may not hold. HK's pseudodemocracy was doing just fine until people started voting for the Wrong People.

It's like they say, "if elections could change anything, elections would be illegal". HK wants to look like it holds elections, so it's better to make key candidates illegal.

I used to say I didn't want to live in Singapore, because while they had democracy on paper it didn't work out all that well in practice, and while HK didn't have real democracy it did have a stronger record on freedom of speech and other civil rights and a hands-off government, and that's what really matters in the end.

Well.

Singapore seems to have an increasingly lively opposition and they did hold elections in the midst of the pandemic.
