Dylan-149Rewatching Crest of the Stars, and wondering if I should go with Japanese this time. I remember the English dub being pretty hanky even when I watched it on TechTV back in the day.
Crest of the Stars isn't nearly as clinical a show as I remembered it being, but it is kinda heady at times.
There have been several scenes of space travel and violence with no narration or dialogue to directly connect them to the immediate events of the story, though their relevance becomes obvious by the end. Plus, the OP is an orchestral piece played over images of celestial bodies; even Legend of the Galactic Heroes had lyrics and characters.
Also it feels like it takes a long time for anything to happen even though the first episode starts with the invasion of a planet and we're witnessing the beginning of an interstellar war.
I knew the fate of the Gosroth ahead of time, but between the battle itself, and Lafiel revealing her birth secret to Jinto, that was quite intense.
Baron Febdash is an utterly contemptible creature, yet Lafiel is able to calmly enjoy the meal while her hate is on clear display in the form of a smile. The Abh are not to be trifled with. #CrestOfTheStars
The Abh may seem cold and reckless, but they're not heartless fools; their thought processes are just so alien to the rest of humanity. Despite that, even a princess of a royal family isn't unexpendable if it serves the Humankind Empire of Abh. #CrestOfTheStars
We've been in Space for so much of the story, but now the roles are reversed and it's Lafiel who's the fish out of water while Jinto has his turn to take the lead.
Also, I just love that the Abh Empress declares war against 4 other nations so casually, despite the fact that the only victory we've observed of theirs so far was the occupation of Jinto's barely armed home planet.

I didn't expect that epilogue, but I'm glad to see that promises were kept.
I must have watched at least some of Banner of the Stars, but I don't have any of it marked on my Kitsu.
There does seem to be much more variety in Abh thinking than my earlier post, but it still feels as though the born-Abh tend to have a sort of detachment about them not shared by other humans.
One metric where Crest/Banner of the Stars definitely beats out Legend of the Galactic Heroes is number of cute girls.
