Re-decentralizing the Web, for good this time

Originally designed as a decentralized ecosystem, the Web has undergone a significant centralization in recent years. In order to regain control over our digital self, over the digital aspects of our lives, we need to understand how we arrived at this point and how we can get back on track…

"We can take back control of our personal data by storing data in our own data pods. The spread of misinformation can be halted, because a free choice of applications allows us to influence our news feed—and all information in there can be traced back to its source. Political advertising becomes more transparent, as we can decide which parts of our data we expose to whom; moreover, the separate data and services markets allow us to consider other options that are not based on advertising ..."
@strypey The SOLID type of approach would be a possible good future for the internet, in which people retain control over their data.

One thing that's easy to predict though is that the incumbents - Google, Facebook, etc - will never support something like SOLID, because having frictionless access to personal data is a very fundamental aspect of their business model. They might however offer data pod services where they still host and retain full access to the data, but just make rather empty claims about greater user control or privacy and so on.
